What is the SOSA™ Consortium?

The Sensor Open Systems Architecture (SOSA) Consortium is a voluntary, consensus-based member consortium of The Open Group, a vendor-neutral technology standards organization.  The SOSA™ Consortium is a government, industry and academic alliance developing an open technical standard for sensors and C5ISR systems.  The consortium provides a vendor-neutral forum for members to work together to harmonize, align, and create open standards to facilitate the development of agile, interoperable, and affordable sensors.

What is the SOSA Consortium Approach?

The SOSA Consortium uses government and industry collaboration to create an open technical standard applicable to military and commercial sensor systems with a business model that balances stakeholder interests. The technical standard will include an open, functional architecture employing modular design using widely supported, consensus-based, non-propriety standards for key interfaces.

Whom from the US government is participating in the SOSA Consortium?

The U.S. Air Force, Army, Navy, Joint Tactical Networking Center and other U.S. government agencies are participating through the services’ memberships.  Please see the member organization list for specific member organizations.

Whom from industry is participating in the SOSA Consortium?

A broad and diverse group of large, medium and small Department of Defense (DoD) supply-base partners participate in the consortium.  Please see the member organization list for specific member organizations.

Is the SOSA Technical Standard only for the US defense segment?

Although the U.S. defense segment is currently driving creation of the standard, the standard is intended to be useful across many additional government and commercial market segments globally. Modular Open Systems Approach (MOSA) concepts are being embraced across all market segments.  All published documents of the consortium are published for anyone to use. 

Who is The Open Group?

The Open Group is an international vendor-neutral and technology-neutral consortium upon which organizations rely to lead the development of open technology standards and certifications, and to provide them with access to key industry peers, suppliers, and best practices.  The Open Group provides guidance and an open environment in order to ensure interoperability and vendor neutrality. Further information on The Open Group can be found at: www.opengroup.org
