VSW5 Lite

Verification Test Suite for the X Window System


Introduction

The X Window System is a sophisticated network based graphics windowing system. Testing this environment requires an equally sophisticated test suite covering library function API testing, object testing, and protocol verification. The VSW5 Lite test suite from X/Open covers these areas and also allows a number of configuration options to accommodate testing of multiple versions of the X Window System. Derived from the previous release from X/Open - VSW4 and the MIT X Test Suite, VSW5 Lite provides broad coverage, a stable code base and a distinctive support program to cover your X Window System Server testing needs.

Note:

The VSW5 Lite test suite is a strict subset of VSW5 designed for companies who wish to brand only a X Window System Server.

Test Suite Features

VSW5 Lite is based upon X/Open's VSW4 and the MIT X Test Suite. All the applicable features of those test suites will continue to be supported in VSW5 Lite. However, VSW5 Lite provides substantial improvements over these test suites in the following areas:

  • Tests for Xlib APIs added in X11r5
  • Enhancement of coverage for APIs that have changed in X11r5
  • Tests for the X11r5 Input Device Extension APIs
  • Repair of all bugs reported against the MIT X Test Suite
  • Integration of support for 64-bit architectures
  • Tests for Compound Text Encoding
  • Ability to configure the tests to run under X11r4, r5, and r6 implementations

For those interested in the full version of this test suite, please note that the full VSW5 test suite includes:

  • Tests for the Xt Toolkit APIs and widget classes
  • Tests for the X11r5 Shape Extension APIs

which are not part of VSW5 Lite. These tests are necessary for branding the API components of the X Window System.


Relationship to X/Open Branding

The primary purpose of this test suite is to help ensure implementations conform to the X/Open XPG4 X Window System component:

  • The XPG4 X Window System Display,

VSW5 Lite is specially designed to test this component in a variety of possible configurations. VSW5 Lite contains configuration options that allow the building and executing of the test suite on an X11r4, r5, or r6 source base. This means that, regardless of your company's current X11 source base, you can reliably use this test suite.

VSW5 and VSW5 Lite are the new indicators of compliance for branding, as of 1 May 96. The original VSW4 test suite has been completely superseded by VSW5 from 1 Aug 96 onwards.


Future Work

X/Open is now starting work on extending VSW5 and VSW5 Lite to test the additional functionality of X11r6.
